Project Name: Pre-feasibility study on Battery Swapping Systems (BSS) model for Electric 2-wheelers in Lao PDR
Project Narrative
Project Background and Objectives
The number of registered vehicles in Lao PDR increased drastically from 367,900 in year 2004 to 2,133,500 in year 2017 (+480%), while transport fuel consumption grew from 855 million liters in 2013 to 1,442 million liters in 2016. Gasoline motorcycles are the primary mode of transport, accounting for 67% of daily trip in Vientiane Capital. The Government of Lao PDR (GoL) has set the objective of transitioning to e-mobility in the transport sector as a priority in the National Green Growth Strategy, the 9th National Social Economic Development Plan (2021-2025) as well as in 2021 Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) update. GoL’s target is to achieve 30% Electric Vehicles penetration including 2-wheelers and passengers’ cars in national vehicles mix by 2030. GGGI is supporting the GoL in accelerating the use of Electric Vehicles in the country, including through the origination and preparation of bankable project opportunities, the mobilization of private sector investment, and the development of a robust EV ecosystem.
